Accused Stalker Asked: 'But Suppose I Am Madeleine?'
A woman accused with pursuing Kate McCann reportedly left her a phone message which asked: "imagine I am Madeleine?"
The defendant, twenty-four, who witnesses stated has persistently asserted she was the missing Madeleine McCann, and her co-defendant are on trial indicted with pursuing Kate and Gerry McCann from June 2022 and February this year.
On Monday, the court learned communication data and evidence obtained from phones documented Ms Wandelt repeatedly demanding Madeleine's mother for a DNA test throughout that period.
Madeleine's case in 2007 - as a three-year-old during a family holiday in Portugal - is among the most covered child disappearance cases and continues to be unsolved.
'I Am Not Seeking Money'
A separate voicemail, shared in court, captured Ms Wandelt stating: "I know I'm overweight and not pretty like Madeleine was, but I feel what I feel."
While one recording of Ms Wandelt's recordings with Mrs McCann's recording stated: "Suppose there is a small chance that I am she? Then what? Is that not significant for you?"
"I do not need money, I maintain a existence here in Poland, I just want to understand," she added.
The panel was told that through emails, mobile messages and phone calls, Ms Wandelt requested a DNA test, forwarded early photographs to her phone in a attempt to show a likeness to Mrs McCann's missing daughter, and claimed to have "recollections" from a early life with the McCanns.
Robert Jones, a data specialist with the police force who compiled the data, advised the court there "didn't appear to be any replies" from Mrs McCann.
Ms Wandelt also contacted close associates of the McCanns, based on the call data.
On 9 October 2024, Mr McCann picked up a communication from Ms Wandelt to his wife's phone, declaring she had "the wrong phone."
During that incident Ms Wandelt recorded a recording on Mrs McCann's recording saying "I will persist and I will prove my point."
The court learned the co-defendant struck up a connection via internet with Ms Wandelt prior to assisting her on a trip to the McCanns' property in that area in that winter.
Communication data revealed Mrs Spragg had communicated using communication app to Mrs McCann to express the media had characterized Ms Wandelt as "emotionally disturbed" but that she deserved to be taken seriously in the time before the visit to that location, that area, in last December.
The court learned correspondence between the two accused, in November 2024, planning endeavoring to get Mrs McCann's genetic material from her trash or from utensils at a dining venue.
"We need to assert ourselves," Mrs Spragg told Ms Wandelt.
On the occasion of the appearance to their residence, the defendant sent a text which stated: "We're currently sitting outside the McCanns' house with our lights out like private investigators. I wanted to achieve this with someone else I didn't imagine I would be engaged in this with the McCanns."
The trial continues.
