Democratic lawmakers Denounce Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Capital Punishment

Democratic officials expressed anger after the ex-president accused a coalition of Democratic legislators of being "turncoats" and declared they should be taken into custody and sentenced "by death" following their release of a contentious video.

The Content That Sparked the Controversy

The video footage, shared on Tuesday, features six Democratic congress members who previously worked in defense or security positions.

"Like us, you all made an oath to protect and uphold this founding document," the lawmakers stated in the brief video. "At present, the risks to our governing document don't only come from overseas, but from within our own country. Our statutes are unambiguous, you can reject illegal orders, you can reject improper directives, you must refuse improper directives. No one has to carry out directives that break the law or our constitution."

The Former President's Furious Reply

The clip appeared to provoke a angry reaction from the former president.

On Thursday morning, Trump published on his preferred platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In another post, he stated: "This is really bad, and Risky to our Nation. Their words cannot be permitted to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a third message, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also shared a comment that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Party Leaders React

Following Trump's remarks on that day, Top Democrats released a combined statement censuring the remarks.

"Violent politics has no position in the United States," they declared. "Representatives who participated in the video all served our United States with great patriotism and distinction. We strongly condemn Donald Trump's disgusting and dangerous death threats against elected officials, and urge Republican lawmakers to forcefully do the same."

The party representatives also said that they had been in touch with law enforcement "to make certain the protection of these members and their families."

"Donald Trump must without delay take down these extreme online messages and withdraw his dangerous discourse before he causes harm," the announcement stated.

Representatives' Firm Reaction

The representatives who appeared in the video also published a response.

"We serve as ex-military personnel and national security professionals who care for this nation and made an vow to protect and defend the national charter of the United States," they declared. "This commitment lasts a lifetime, and we aim to maintain it. No warning, coercion, or promotion of aggression will stop us from that important duty."

"What's most telling is that the ex-president deems it subject to penalty by capital punishment for us to repeat the law," they continued. "Military personnel should know that we have their backs as they execute their pledge to the constitution and obligation to obey only lawful orders. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our obligation."

They continued: "All citizens must join forces and denounce the president's requests for our execution and partisan aggression. This is a moment for principled stance."

Further Political Responses

The Opposition leader also denounced Trump's statements and shared on social media: "It's important to understand: the President of the United States is calling for the death of elected officials."

He stated: "This represents an outright THREAT. All senators, every Representative, the entire nation – without partisan consideration – should denounce this right away and without qualification."

The GOP leader justified Trump's claim that the Democrats had participated in "treason", characterizing the video as "extremely improper", commenting: "This constitutes very risky, you have leading members of Congress instructing military personnel to defy commands, I think that's historic in the nation's past."

The Conservative representative also according to sources informed journalists that in what he examined of Trump's posts, Trump was "explaining the crime of rebellion" but that "attorneys have to parse the wording and establish all that."

White House Reaction

During a administration briefing on later that day, when asked by a media member, "Is the president want to execute elected officials?", the White House press secretary replied: "Certainly not."

"Let's be clear about what the president is reacting to," the official declared. "You have sitting members of the American legislature who conspired to organize a recorded statement to individuals of the American armed forces, to active duty service members urging them to defy the commander in chief's lawful orders."

She stated: "The integrity of our military relies on the chain of command, and if that chain of command is violated, it can lead to casualties, it can lead to chaos, and that is exactly what these elected officials ... are basically supporting."
