Offspring of Ex- South African Leader Jacob G Zuma Rejects Terror-Related Accusations as Trial Starts
The child of former South African Head of State Jacob G Zuma has denied all charges to terror-linked allegations at the start of her legal proceedings in the harbor city of the city of Durban.
Zuma-Sambudla, 43, is being prosecuted over comments she posted on social media several years back during violent demonstrations in South Africa that occurred subsequent to the arrest of her parent.
A seven-day period of disorder in various areas of the country in July 2021, including theft and fire-setting, left at least 300 individuals killed and resulted in damage worth an estimated $2.8 billion (2.2 billion pounds).
Zuma-Sambudla has been accused of encouraging this violence and is charged with allegations of provocation to commit terror acts and civil unrest.
History of the Legal Matter
The protests were centered in the areas of the Gauteng province and KwaZulu-Natal and came after the former president's arrest for disobeying a legal directive to appear as a witness at an investigation into allegations of corruption while he was serving as president.
Ms Zuma-Sambudla has always refuted the allegations against her, with her legal representative previously calling the state's case as unsubstantiated.
She has also repeatedly said the allegations against her were an attempt to settle political scores with her father after he established his own political organization and competed against the ruling party.
Backing and Court Representation
This was echoed by the Zuma foundation, which claimed the proceedings was an "misuse of authority" and a "systematic campaign" of "politically motivated and familial targeting" against the former president and his family.
A handful of backers from her group, her party, appeared outside the judicial building, while her father and other organization officials attended the court sessions inside.
The defense has argued that the testimony presented by government lawyers is unconvincing and does not have compelling grounds for a criminal finding.
