Prisons Cannot Be Resolved Immediately, Minister States, while Police Search For Two Men Mistakenly Freed
Opposition justice spokesperson Robert Jenrick has labeled the situation as a "total shambles," speaking earlier today.
Appearing on a broadcast interview, he pointed to comments made by the justice minister following a recent inmate discharge, stating that the minister would implement more robust verifications.
"It took six days for the prison service supposedly to even become aware this occurred" and inform the authorities, Jenrick explains, "who are now a week late in the search to find him."
The shadow minister condemns the minister's performance during recent PMQs and accuses him of a "total dereliction of duty."
Addressing mistaken prison releases in broader terms, Jenrick underlines that "each accidental release [...] is unforgivable."
He admits there were similar incidents under the previous administration, but says the number "has increased dramatically" under Labour.
Calling for additional correctional facilities to be constructed, he continues: "What the British people want to see now are proper checks put in place."
"That is a specific bureaucratic error by the Ministry of Justice supervised by David Lammy," Jenrick says.
