Seattle's Pride Celebrations Will Go Ahead During FIFA Tournament Despite Objections from Egypt and Iran
Plans for Pride-focused celebrations in Seattle amid the upcoming World Cup will continue unabated, even after Iranian and Egyptian football federations voiced objections regarding a planned “Pride Match.”
Stadium Policy and External Festivities
Local organizers have confirmed they are “moving forward as planned” with celebratory programming in the city center. This coincides with the Group G fixture featuring Egypt and Iran on 26 June. Additionally, FIFA will permit rainbow flags inside the match venue.
“In our role as hosts, our role is to get the city ready to welcome visitors for the matches and manage the fan activities outside of Seattle Stadium,” stated a committee representative.
Cultural Background Behind the Formal Complaints
Same-sex relations are criminalized in Iran, and in Egypt, public decency statutes are often used to prosecute LGBTQ+ people. Egypt's football association stated it did not want to be associated with events that “directly contradict the social, religious and cultural values … in Arab and Islamic societies.” In a parallel move, Iran’s football federation also raised “objections against the issue.”
FIFA's Stance on Symbols
The international federation holds operational control of stadiums during games. While it prohibits banners and flags with overtly political content, it permits flags expressing “sporting and social symbols,” a category which includes the Pride flag. This policy was applied at the most recent World Cup in Qatar and was reaffirmed after incidents of authorities confiscating flags.
- The Pride Match concept was devised to showcase the city's longstanding tradition of advocating for equality.
- An artistic competition is underway to produce artwork celebrating the occasion.
- Organizers are committed to making sure all fans are welcomed in the city throughout the tournament.
The Pacific Northwest hosts a significant largest Iranian-American communities, a thriving Egyptian expatriate community, and diverse populations representing all nations. “We’re committed is to guaranteeing everyone encounter the hospitality, dignity, and respect that defines our region,” organizers concluded.
