Shoaib Bashir Earns Unexpected Selection in England's Ashes Team
England have opted for a twelve-player squad just 48 hours ahead of the first Ashes Test, with the 22-year-old spinner earning a unexpected place.
Bashir's inclusion suggests that the visiting team will delay until the morning of the first Test to decide whether the venue pitch suit four seamers or the addition of a spin bowler.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are included in the selected group, showing there are no concerns about their fast bowler's condition.
The other seamers complete the attack, with Carse most likely to miss out if Bashir makes the final team.
Pitch Factors Favor Pace Bowlers
The England coach had been expected to opt for an pace-only lineup on a venue that has hosted several past matches.
In those matches, the majority of dismissals have been taken by pace bowling, with only 40 to spin.
Among these spin dismissals, the veteran spinner has claimed 29, while overseas slow bowlers combined have just a handful.
On a ground known for its speed and carry, and whose groundsman, the pitch preparer, stated that these characteristics are “permanent and not going to change,” a team relying on seamers is still the probable choice.
Spin Options Weighed
There had been speculation that Will Jacks could be brought into the team to offer some spin while also strengthening the lower order.
However McCullum has chosen to keep faith with Bashir, having said earlier this year that he would be his first-choice spinner for the series.
Earlier, Lyon described the English spinner as “OK,” adding that “from my perspective, the experienced spinner is still England’s best spinner.”
“It is a massive role, and it can be a massive challenge for people who haven’t done it in the past in these conditions,” Lyon said of spin bowling in matches Down Under.
“I won't reveal my strategies so they come out and perform well out here.”
