The network's Top New Show of This Year Earns a Substantial Extension for Two More Seasons.

Last October, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the channel introduced a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. During a period often defined by bleakness, this show's sincerity resonated deeply and propelled it a breakout hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The show centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Network Praise

In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and supported its peculiarly charming appeal.

"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about observing this endearing family navigate their daily lives.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to help comedy break out of its current cynical streak. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.

“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

The Path Forward

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to experience the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. All episodes is currently streaming on HBO Max.
