In a highly critical analysis, the security review board asserted that the UK is "far from" the required position to properly protect itself and its partners, particularly during a era when security threats to the continent are "significant".

The board chairman added that the panel had "consistently received concerns about Britain's capability to protect itself from military action".

The specific proposals contained a request for the government to speed up the rate of industrial change and make "readiness" a primary objective.
