Zverev Faces Auger-Aliassime in ATP Finals Clash
Preamble
The inherent challenges of tournament pool play mean during this phase of the ATP World Tour Finals we’re often left confused, hastily looking for a computing device and striving to determine the complex potential outcomes for advancement. However today's game between Zverev and Auger-Aliassime, mercifully, is straightforward. It’s a straight shootout: the victor secures a semi-final battle against Carlos Alcaraz at this year-end tournament; the defeated player heads out.
Zverev is the favourite for this: the world No 3 is the more accomplished player, has been the champion at this event on two prior occasions and leads their head-to-head six matches to three, having won both their past encounters on an enclosed hard court.
However … this particular court on which the Canadian has won the bulk of his trophies, he’s riding a high after his remarkable turnaround against Ben Shelton on recently and he defeated the German in the US Open early stage in August. Furthermore, conditions are faster in the host city than at Flushing Meadows, which is even more beneficial in AA’s favor.
Should Zverev be cautious, as he did against the Italian, and Felix aggressively challenges the German with his stinging serves and fearless play, it might very well be the North American athlete – the former prodigy who was once in line ahead of the younger champions to succeed the legendary trio – who secures the questionable privilege of competing with the top-ranked player the next day.
The match starts: at approximately 8:30 PM in Turin, 7.30pm GMT.
